Support Bill C-266: An Act to Establish Pope John Paul II Day

I had the honour to stand up in the House of Commons on June 12th, and vote in favour of MP Wladyslaw Lizon’s (Mississauga East—Cooksville) Private Member’s Bill C-266, “An Act to Establish Pope John Paul II Day.” I am pleased to inform you that the bill has passed the House of Commons and will now be referred to the Senate.

However, I was saddened to see NDP Leader Thomas Mulcair and 41 other members of his NDP caucus vote against this bill. Blessed Pope John Paul II was a champion of freedom in the face of tyranny and promoted universal values of human rights and democracy. He was an inspiration to many and it is unfortunate that nearly half of the NDP Caucus, including their leader, voted against this bill to honour a modern day hero.

Blessed Pope John Paul II was not only a religious figure, but also a profoundly important civic leader who built lasting relationships with other faith groups. As the Bill is now going to be considered by the Senate, I invite you to express your support for this initiative by signing the following online petition on my website:

Please feel free to share this message with your family and friends.

Kind regards,

Hon. Jason Kenney, PC, MP

Calgary Southeast

STATEMENT BY Mp wladyslaw lizon on the passing

Wladyslaw Lizon, MP for Mississauga East-Cooksville, issued the following statement regarding the passage of Bill C-266 in the House of Commons:

“Today, my Private Members Bill C-266 “An Act to establish Pope John Paul II Day” passed at third reading in the House of Commons. This Bill was seconded by the MP for Etobicoke Centre, Ted Opitz.

Bill C-266 recognizes Blessed Pope John Paul II’s many accomplishments of universal significance: his message of courage, his defence of freedom in the face of tyranny, and the profound statements of hope he expressed to the world. When it becomes law, this Bill will designate April 2nd of every year as Pope John Paul II Day in Canada.

We are pleased that this Bill passed with strong support from all parties, with 217 Members voting in favour.”

The Bill will now be referred to the Senate and, if passed, referred to the Governor General to receive Royal Assent.

Thank you to all those who have supported this important effort, I look forward to celebrating the first John Paul II Day with you and all Canadians next year.”
